New Rochelle Cops Arrest Alleged Cabbie Killer After NYC Shootout: Sources

A shootout between police and a suspected killer in downtown Brooklyn late Sunday morning is tied to the murder of a cab driver in New Rochelle, law enforcement sources say.

Police from New Rochelle took the man into custody around 11 a.m. Sunday after a brief shootout near Fleet Walk and Myrtle Avenue. An NYPD spokesperson said no one was injured in shootout.

No police from the NYPD were involved in the incident, the department told NBC New York.

The New Rochelle Police Department did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The out-of-town officers were in the city hunting the man suspected of shooting Andres Valenzuela Thursday morning in a New Rochelle parking lot as he finished his shift. Valenzuela drove for Empress City Taxi for over a decade.

His last call into dispatch that night showed no signs of trouble.

Family and friends gathered at that lot Friday evening where a growing memorial sits. The cab driver’s daughter said that her father had no enemies, and that he had worked to support his wife and three kids as a cab driver for the past 20 years. 

“It’s sad to see a hard working man get killed like this,” Luis Franco, president of the Association of Taxis. “We want to ask anyone if they know something come forward — help this family.”
