'The Great Gatsby' musical is officially opening on Broadway this April
A new musical adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's iconic novel The Great Gatsby will officially debut on Broadway this spring, with previews scheduled to premiere on March 29 and opening night set for April 25 at the Broadway Theatre at 1681 Broadway by 53rd Street.
Tony Award-nominated actors Jeremy Jordan and Eva Noblezada will take on the famous roles of, respectively, Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan.
Marc Bruni, who was also behind the 2014 hit Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, will direct the new show, which will feature songs by Nathan Tysen and Jason Howland and a book by playwright Kait Kerrigan.
The show joins a pretty hefty roster of spring premieres that Broadway aficionados are excited to catch, including the first Broadway revival of John Patrick Shanley's Pulitzer Prize-winning 2004 drama Doubt, starring Liev Schreiber; an adaptation of Nicholas Sparks' bestselling 1996 novel The Notebook (which inspired a 2004 movie that has become part and parcel of American culture); and The Outsiders, yet another adaptation, this one of S.E. Hinton's seminal 1967 young-adult novel and Francis Ford Coppola's 1982 film version of it.
The Great Gatsby's Broadway premiere follows a sold-out run at Paper Mill Playhouse last fall, which enjoyed mixed reviews by critics (let's be honest: Fitzgerald's original book wasn't universally loved either, and is now considered one of the greatest works of American literature).
Tickets are now on sale right here.
An important note: this musical is not to be confused with yet another one that uses the classic novel as source material.
More simply dubbed Gatsby, the other show will be debuting pre-Broadway performances on May 25 at the American Repertory Theater in Queens.
With a book by Martina Majok, Gatsby features music and lyrics by Florence Welch of Florence and the Machine. Tickets will be available some time in March right here.
