Hanukkah-themed pop-up Maccabee Bar is opening in Tribeca

Hanukkah-themed pop-up Maccabee Bar is opening in Tribeca

It’s nearly time to celebrate the Festival of Lights again!

Hanukkah runs from Wednesday, December 25 through January 1 this year, but, before you get ready to light the menorah, a drink is in order. There’s a perfect pop-up for that: the Maccabee Bar is in New York again at Tribeca’s Saint Tuesday starting Monday, December 23.

Located inside the Walker Hotel at 77 Walker Street this year, the Maccabee Bar was created by longtime bartender Naomi Levy in Boston back in 2018. For Levy, this stemmed from feeling like the holiday season had plenty of Yuletide bars but often left Jewish people out of the mix. According to Levy, the Maccabee Bar is for anyone who wants to try a different spin on the holidays.

“I love Christmas and all of the Christmas bars that pop up this time of year,” said Levy in a statement on Maccabee Bar’s website. “But I always felt like a tourist. There was never really anything for someone like me that wasn’t raised with Christmas.”

Starting in 2022, the Maccabee Bar expanded to New York, where Levy set up shop in the West Village bar Ollie.

This year, the location is shifting south to Saint Tuesday, but Levy will still be bringing Hanukkah-themed decor, classic holiday foods and Hanukkah-specific cocktails—including some made especially for this year in New York!

One of the new inclusions is the Kosher Nostra, “a play on a Negroni using the flavors of tzimmes,” said Levy. It includes gin, Manischewitz wine, amaro, and more.

But Levy will also be offering previous successes. If you’re in the mood for something citrus-y, be sure to try the Latke Sour, which contains apple brandy, lemon, Havana & Hyde bitters with a touch of potato. If you love your gin, try the Ocho Kandelikas, which takes an olive oil gin and pairs with honey, apricot, almond and lemon.

To balance those drinks out, the kitchen at Saint Tuesday will prepare small bites, including—you guessed it—latkes. Although it’s not confirmed apple sauce or sour cream is provided, we’ll speculate that they’ve got all of the classic toppings.

The pop-up bar runs until January 4, 2015, so you’ve got plenty of time to try one of Levy's thrilling cocktails. Learn more at maccabeebar.com
