Iconic British record store Rough Trade is expanding its space at Rockefeller Center

Rough Trade, the iconic U.K. record store that has cemented itself as a cultural institution on this side of the pond, announced that it will significantly expand its presence at the Rockefeller Center.

For an expansion it’s dubbing "Rough Trade Below," the record store is creating an additional 4,000 square feet of space, adding room for even more vinyl records, intimate concerts and signings.

Rough Trade relocated its flagship store from Williamsburg to the Rockefeller Center in 2021 after noting that its business was struggling as a result of the pandemic. The record store has seemingly done very well since it relocated, and its latest expansion will be right in front of the Rockefeller Center/47-50 Street B/D/F/M subway station.

“It’s clear that the ethos of Rough Trade—to narrow the gap between artist and audience—has struck a tremendous chord, here in New York,” said Stephen Godfroy, co-owner of Rough Trade, in a statement. “Creating a focus of counterculture in midtown Manhattan has thankfully proved to be a wildly successful move, and we look forward to creating an even stronger creative community as the year progresses.”

In the past year, Rough Trade has hosted shows and signings by some of the most iconic contemporary artists today, including Charli xcx, Coldplay and others. The Rough Trade Below expansion will increase the capacity for in-store events from several dozen to a couple of hundred spectators. Rough Trade Below will carry a selection of artist and band merch, audio hardware, a used records section, a selection of new and used CDs, BluRay movies, collectables, and more. It will also feature a new version of one of Rough Trade’s popular PhotoBooths. Note that the upstairs level of the store will also be renamed to "Rough Trade Above" to distinguish the two spaces from each other. 

Rough Trade Below is set to open to the public this spring.
