The first-ever completely free grocery store is opening in NYC next week

New York has seen pop-ups, stunts and “for a limited time only” everything—but this one genuinely raises an eyebrow. Starting next week, the city is getting what’s being called its first fully free grocery store. That means no loyalty cards, no sign-ups, no checkout screen asking you to tip. Just groceries, for nothing.

It’s called The Polymarket and it opens February 12 at noon. The concept comes from Polymarket, the crypto-based prediction market that lets users bet on everything from elections to economic data. But this time, instead of odds and outcomes, they’re offering pantry staples.

According to the company, the store will be fully stocked and open to all New Yorkers, with “no purchase required.” Polymarket says it signed a lease, built out a physical retail space and plans to operate the store through Sunday, February 15. As of now, the exact address hasn’t been publicly announced.

Alongside the opening, Polymarket has donated $1 million to Food Bank For NYC, which confirmed the contribution. The organization estimates that every dollar donated can help provide up to three meals for New Yorkers facing food insecurity—making the grocery store splashy, but also tied to a very real relief effort across all five boroughs.

The timing isn’t accidental. The free-grocery move comes amid a very New York debate about food costs and access. Mayor Zohran Mamdani has proposed opening city-run grocery stores in every borough to sell food at wholesale prices, an idea that’s been praised by affordability advocates but criticized by industry groups. Polymarket’s version skips the wholesale step entirely and goes straight to zero dollars.

It also follows a competing stunt earlier this month by Kalshi, which handed out $50 worth of free groceries to shoppers at an East Village supermarket, an event that drew long lines and plenty of attention.

How Polymarket’s store will manage crowds, limits or restocking hasn’t been detailed and the company hasn’t said what happens if demand overwhelms supply. But if recent grocery giveaways are any indication, there will be plenty of lines and curiosity.
