Anyone can step on stage in the middle of Times Square, grab a mic and speak freely at this one-day-only public performance
For one hour this Friday, Times Square is turning into an open mic for democracy.
On May 1 from 12pm to 1pm, anyone passing through Father Duffy Square will be invited to climb onto a raised platform, grab a microphone and speak freely—uncensored and unfiltered—as part of Cuban artist Tania Bruguera’s provocative public performance Tatlin’s Whisper #6.
Presented by Times Square Arts in partnership with Fall of Freedom, the one-hour event will revive one of the most famous participatory artworks of the last two decades. First staged at the 2009 Havana Biennial, the original performance invited ordinary people to publicly speak their minds in Cuba, a place where open criticism of the government has long carried real risks.
The setup is simple, involving a microphone, a stage and an invitation. One by one, participants can step forward to address the crowd for a limited time before passing the mic along. In a surreal touch, white doves will briefly be placed on each speaker’s shoulders.
Bruguera has described the work as an examination of who truly gets to speak freely—and under what conditions. “Freedom of expression is taken each time silence feels safer than speech, each time convenience outweighs conviction, each time we mistake the absence of punishment for the presence of freedom,” the artist said in a statement.
If this sounds familiar, that’s because a version of the piece already landed in Times Square once before. Back in 2015, Tatlin’s Whisper #6 was staged there with Creative Time after Bruguera was arrested in Cuba for attempting to perform the work publicly in Havana’s Plaza de la Revolución.
This latest staging arrives on May Day (also known internationally as Labor Day) and organizers say the timing is intentional. The performance is part of a larger national initiative from Fall of Freedom, which will see museums, galleries, theaters and performance spaces around the country host events centered on free expression, dissent and civic participation.
“There are few places in the world where the right to be seen and heard carries the symbolic charge and reach that it does in Times Square,” said Anna Starling, director of Times Square Arts. “We are honored to bring Tatlin’s Whisper #6 back to the Crossroads of the World.”
If you’ve ever wanted to yell your truth into the middle of Times Square, this might be your moment.
