If you've ever watched a World Cup match in Europe, you know it's not really about the soccer. It's about hundreds of people packed shoulder-to-shoulder, the collective groan after a missed shot and the roar that erupts after a goal.

Now, Brooklyn has its own version.

A sprawling new soccer destination called The World by Zum Schneider has officially opened on the Greenpoint waterfront, turning Franklin Point at 12 Franklin Street into what may be New York City's most ambitious World Cup viewing venue yet.

Running through July 19, the massive pop-up comes from beloved German beer hall Zum Schneider and developer Astral Weeks, which recently opened Franklin Point, a new multi-level waterfront event venue overlooking the East River. For the run of the tournament, the space has been turned into a soccer village designed to recreate the atmosphere of a European match day.

The centerpiece is The Arena, a stadium-inspired indoor fan zone anchored by a giant 10-by-16-foot screen, surround sound and communal beer hall tables. Multiple additional screens are spread throughout the venue, while foosball tables, interactive games and a planned mini soccer pitch ensure there’s no shortage of things to do. For those who like soccer with a skyline view, there's also a rooftop viewing area overlooking Manhattan. The open-air space has outdoor screens, expanded drink options and a more laid-back atmosphere than the main arena below.

Of course, no Zum Schneider event would be complete without beer and pretzels. The menu includes giant Bavarian pretzels, bratwurst, currywurst, Obazda cheese spread and German beers like Paulaner and Radeberger served in traditional glass mugs. The venue also plans to rotate food specials inspired by countries participating in the tournament.

While The World is focused on the World Cup for now, the opening also serves as the debut of Franklin Point itself, a new waterfront venue that can host large-scale events, private gatherings, brand activations and other programming. Most matches are free to attend on a walk-in basis, though reservations are required for some of the high-demand games, including certain U.S. and Germany matches.

With giant screens, riverfront views and enough bratwurst to feed an entire supporters' section, it may be the closest thing New Yorkers will find to a European fan zone this summer, no transatlantic flight required.
