The Knicks-themed Penn Station subway stop is staying orange and blue until the next NBA season
If you've already added the orange-and-blue Penn Station subway entrance to your list of unofficial New York landmarks, good news: it's not going anywhere anytime soon.
Fresh off the Knicks' first NBA championship in 53 years, Governor Kathy Hochul announced that the MTA will keep the team-themed entrance at 34th Street and Eighth Avenue painted in Knicks colors through the 2026-27 season. The bright blue railings with orange accents and basketball-inspired lamp globes became a rallying point during the team's playoff run and will now continue to greet fans headed to the Garden as the defending champions take the court next season.
The transformation started before the NBA Finals, when MTA crews gave the southeast entrance to the 34th Street–Penn Station A, C and E station a Knicks makeover ahead of the team's showdown against the San Antonio Spurs. What started as a temporary tribute quickly became one of the city's most-photographed sports landmarks, as fans posed for selfies and gathered before games.
"After 53 long years, the Knicks are finally NBA Champions again and New York City has come together like never before to celebrate this historic achievement for our city," Hochul said in a statement announcing the preservation of the entrance.
MTA chair and CEO Janno Lieber struck a similarly sentimental note. "This is about preserving more than just paint," he said. "The Knicks' historic championship run triggered an explosion of New York spirit and our iconic orange and blue subway entrance was at the center of the action."
The announcement was made alongside perhaps the only person in New York more synonymous with Knicks fandom than the Garden itself: filmmaker Spike Lee, who joined Hochul to unveil the plan.
