Spike Lee and BAM are debuting a brand-new festival celebrating all things Brooklyn
Brooklyn has never exactly suffered from a lack of hometown pride. But this fall, the borough is getting a festival designed to celebrate the place where film, music, food, art and culture all collide—with one of its most famous champions helping lead the way.
Filmmaker Spike Lee has teamed up with the Brooklyn Academy of Music, producer Nicholas Ma and Clara Wu Tsai to launch “Playback: The Brooklyn Watch Party,” a new two-day festival taking over BAM on November 6 and 7. The inaugural event will feature repertory film screenings, conversations with cultural icons, live performances, pop-up experiences and a free street fair celebrating Brooklyn’s creative spirit.
Friday night will center on music, poetry, film and conversations inside BAM's Howard Gilman Opera House, with a slate of celebrity guest curators whose identities haven't yet been revealed. On Saturday, those guest curators will program a series of film screenings with special appearances, while a free afternoon block party will feature live music, local food vendors and community activations. The weekend wraps with a special screening of Crooklyn, featuring appearances by Lee, Alfre Woodard and additional guests.

"With Playback we are setting out to create a new kind of film festival—one that brings together people who share a love of storytelling through film," Clara Wu Tsai said in a statement. "Spike has put Brooklyn on screen for decades, and BAM has served as the borough's cultural hub for over a century. There is nowhere else like Brooklyn, nothing like the energy of this borough, and this festival will highlight all that makes our community unique."
Additional guest curators, speakers and programming will be announced in the coming months. Tickets go on sale in September, though the Saturday afternoon street fair will be free to attend.
