The Brooklyn Bridge is getting its own musical and it premieres next week
If you've ever walked across the Brooklyn Bridge and wondered what it took to build one of New York's greatest landmarks, a new musical is about to give you the backstory—with songs, scaffolding and a heroine who deserves far more recognition than she gets.
Brooklyn's Bridge will make its New York premiere at The Space at Irondale in Fort Greene on August 7 and run through August 23, bringing to life the true story behind the city's most iconic crossing. (Best of all, the theater sits just minutes from the bridge itself, so you can visit the star in-person before or after the performance.)
Rather than focusing on the bridge alone, the original musical centers on Emily Roebling, the woman widely credited with helping ensure the bridge's completion after her husband, chief engineer Washington Roebling, became seriously ill with caisson disease during construction.

When work began in 1869, the Brooklyn Bridge was one of the most ambitious engineering projects the world had ever seen. When it opened in 1883 (after 14 years of construction), it was the longest suspension bridge on Earth. While thousands of New Yorkers cross it every day, Emily's role in its creation has often been overshadowed by the bridge itself.
The production follows Emily as she learns the language of engineering and becomes the crucial link between her bedridden husband, the construction crews and city officials, overseeing one of the most complex infrastructure projects of the 19th century. Designed specifically for The Space at Irondale, Brooklyn's Bridge remakes the theater using multi-level scaffolding and platforms that evoke everything from the Roeblings' Brooklyn Heights home to the hazardous caissons beneath the East River and the bridge's soaring towers. Audiences are surrounded by the action as the bridge gradually takes shape throughout the show.
Brooklyn's Bridge features a cast of 10 actors and four onstage musicians performing an original score that ranges from Irish folk-inspired melodies and work songs to political satire and intimate duets. It was created by composer Joseph Baker, with book, lyrics and direction by Ray Roderick and choreography by Kelli Barclay.
