You can see the Knicks' Championship Trophy live at the Natural History museum starting next week
The Knicks finally brought an NBA championship back to New York. Now you can get up close to the trophy that made it official.
Beginning Monday, July 27, the NBA's Larry O'Brien Trophy—the championship trophy awarded to the 2025-26 NBA champion New York Knicks—will go on display at the American Museum of Natural History, where it will remain through January 3 of next year. Freshly engraved with the Knicks' championship victory, the trophy becomes the newest addition to “For the Win: Objects of Sports Excellence,” the museum's blockbuster exhibition that celebrates some of the greatest achievements in sports history.
For New Yorkers still riding the high from the team's long-awaited title run, it's a rare chance to see one of the city's newest—and most coveted—pieces of hardware without needing courtside seats or an invite to MSG.
Crafted by Tiffany & Co. from sterling silver with gold vermeil, the roughly 30-pound trophy depicts a regulation basketball dropping through a net. It's also engraved with every NBA champion dating back to 1947, with the Knicks joining that historic list for the first time since ending their 53-year championship drought.
"This championship has given New Yorkers an extraordinary moment to celebrate together, at a time when both global competitions and hometown victories have brought a remarkable energy to the city," said American Museum of Natural History President Sean M. Decatur. "The Museum is delighted to offer visitors the opportunity to see this powerful symbol of athletic achievement up close while exploring the broader significance of sports through the incredible collection of objects featured in For the Win."
The trophy feels especially at home in the exhibition. Among its more than 70 objects is legendary Knicks coach Red Holzman's basketball-shaped championship fob from the franchise's 1973 title, which was the team's previous NBA championship before this season's historic win.
"When we opened ‘For the Win,’ Red Holzman's 1973 Knicks championship fob was the piece that connected this city to its basketball past," guest curator Vikki Tobak said. "Now the NBA's Larry O'Brien Trophy arrives with the Knicks' names freshly engraved on it and that circle closes in a way we never could have planned."
Even if basketball isn't your sport, "For the Win" is worth a visit. The exhibition spans nearly 150 years of athletic history and includes everything from one of Jesse Owens' gold medals from the 1936 Berlin Olympics to the Vince Lombardi Trophy and the New York Liberty's 2024 WNBA championship trophy.
Best of all, you won't need a separate ticket to see it. The exhibition is included with general museum admission, making it one of the easiest (and most affordable) ways to see a genuine piece of New York sports history this summer.
