A free circus festival is taking over Bryant Park next week with a massive trampoline, aerial acts and more
New York has plenty of places to see people flying through the air, but usually they’re wearing harnesses on Broadway—or attempting something ill-advised on the subway. Next weekend, though, Bryant Park is bringing in the professionals.
On Saturday, August 29, the Midtown green space will transform into an open-air circus for Parallel Exit: Sunset Circus, a free hour-long spectacle featuring aerialists, jugglers, acrobats, comedians and, perhaps most importantly, a massive trampoline planted right on the lawn.
The performance is part of Bryant Park’s free Picnic Performances series and runs from 5pm to 6pm, with no tickets or reservations. You can simply show up, stake out a patch of grass and prepare to watch seven circus artists do things with their bodies that would send most of us directly to urgent care.

Sunset Circus comes from Parallel Exit, a New York-based physical theater company known for combining circus arts with comedy and storytelling. Its performers have experience with some pretty big names in the circus world, including Cirque du Soleil and Big Apple Circus, and the Bryant Park show will mix aerial acts, juggling, acrobatics and physical comedy into a theatrical production designed for audiences of all ages.
If watching people somersault through the air makes you hungry, you can turn the outing into an actual picnic. Bryant Park will provide hundreds of free blankets and its signature bistro chairs for Picnic Performances, while food and drinks are available from vendors around the park.
The circus is just one part of Bryant Park’s remaining late-summer lineup: the night before, on Friday, August 28, the park hosts its free Accordion Festival, while September brings performances from the Asian American Arts Alliance, a Brass Festival, Dance Party All-Stars and the American Symphony Orchestra.
