A nor’easter threatens NYC this weekend with high winds and coastal flooding
New York City is bracing for a weekend nor’easter that promises gusty winds, persistent rainfall and significant coastal flooding. In other words, a pretty miserable weekend.
Mayor Mamdani and New York City Emergency Management (NYCEM) are tracking the system, which is currently projected to pass offshore, keeping the heaviest downpours to the east. However, officials warn that minor shifts in the storm track could heighten local impacts, so don't get too comfortable.
Rain is expected to begin Friday afternoon and continue through Sunday, delivering 1 to 1.5 inches of total rainfall. Winds will intensify late Friday, bringing gusts up to 40 mph into Saturday morning. Conditions are expected to gradually clear late Saturday night as the system pushes further out to sea.
The main threat stems from tidal conditions. Low-lying coastal neighborhoods—specifically Jamaica Bay, the Rockaways and Staten Island’s eastern shore—face elevated flood risks during the Friday evening (7:30–8:30pm) and Saturday morning (7:30–8:40am) high tides. Drivers in low-lying zones are advised to move vehicles to higher ground.
High-risk rip currents and rough surf will hit local beaches, causing potential coastal erosion. Beachgoers and boaters are strongly advised to stay clear of the shoreline.
